Atty Dwight Trasadas: The city government under Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog is burying us in debts for overspending.

By hiring 7,000 casuals, the city bleeds at least P54 million monthly for their salaries which is half a billion plus a year. The amount could have been invested in social services. 


Iloilo City Rep. Jerry Trenas, a "political plagiarist'?

That's what former congressman and justice secretary Raul Gonzalez Sr. (2nd from right) calls him.

When gonzalez's son and namesake, Raul Jr. (2nd from left, with microphone) , sat as member of the Lower House, he authored a bill converting the West Visayas College of Science and Technology into a state univirsity.

When Trenas became member of the Lower House, he trashed Gonzalez's proposed measure but authored an identical bill which basically brought no substantial difference from that of Gonzalez.

If Sen. Tito Sotto III plagiarized in his privileged speeches, Trenas committed a similar offense, political plagiarism, muses the elder Gonzalez.
 

The younger Gonzalez (2nd from left, with microphone) is running for Congress versus Rep. Trenas. He says that in his six years in the Lower House, he authored six laws "of national siginifance" and plowed into Iloilo City P270 million in projects, foremost of which is his "medical assistance/referral system" where part of his discretionary fund is "obligated" to public hospitals in Iloilo City t
o tend to indigent patients.

His medical assistance fund, also include cash assistance to walk-in indigents at the minimum P2,000 each.

Such program no longer exists today under Trenas. Patients or their relatives have to wait in long queues for interviews only to be told to return the next day. When they do the next day, they are given P300 to P500 each, which is a little over what they spent for transportation to and fro the congressional office.

Kalampay getting scarce and costly

Today a kilo of kalampay fetches P80 to P140, at par with other fishes. This freshwater crab was almost free before. Photo above shows a freshly broiled crab. Kalampay" for sale was almost unheard of 40 years ago. The freshwater crab teemed in Iloilo rivers and people caught it for free. Today, it fetches the minimum P80 per kilo. Surprisingly, Iloilo River, dubbed the country's biggest septic tank after Pasig River, is still home to crabs and shrimps that Ilonggos consume. Mention the word today to the young generation and they would stare at you bewildered. "Kalampay? Ano ra man? (Kalampay? What's that.)" They more they would stare at you blankly if you asked them what "katang" and "baringay" are. The usage of term is getting scarcer like the fate of kalampay. "Katang" is a juvenile kalampay, the size a half thumb while "baringay" are botton size ones that migrate inland from the sea where they are spawned.

Broad daylight robbery by Treñas and caboodle

    Mayor Jerry Treñas and his caboodle in the mass disinformation industry are yelping accolades and jumping in glee at nothing but how good, bright and promising the fates of the Iloilo Terminal Market and Iloilo Central Market would be under his watch.
