Miagao town, 40 km. south of Iloilo City, has inked a deal with the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) to erect a Triple A abattoir which, when done, will enable the facility to produce frozen choiced cuts that are eligible for export overseas.

Councilor Rodolfo Legaspi II did not state the cost of the abattoir to be built outside the poblacion but said Mayor Macario Napulan reported the municipality is erecting one funded by the NMIS. He did not say though whether the budget would be a grant or a soft-term loan from the national government agency.

An NMIS-accredited triple-A abattoir has complied with world standards on safety, hygiene and sanitation, and quality of meat  processed, among others. For one, the facility within and its holding bay outside (for animals awaiting processing) is hygienic, the solid and liquid wastes treated in septic tank, with clean running taps, and conveyor chain where the carcasses are suspended on air while processed.

The NMIS classifies abattoirs into three: triple-A, double-A (which poduces carcasses for sale outside the source to other towns, cities or provinces, and single-A where the whole carcass is only for sale within the locality./

When that happened, Miagao would be in the league of Iloilo City which is upgrading its existing abattoir at Tacas, Pavia into triple-A. (end)

Hay, ang irihawan sa Tacas nga pwerte ka overpriced, wara ti tarong nga waste disposal, clean running water, kag ang mga sapat ginapang-ihaw nga bara-bara sa galaputyak nga salog imbis nga ginabitay sa conveyor.

Gaalisngaw pa bahu kang abattoir kang World City hay ang higku gakaarawas sa kanal imbis nga maagi anay sa septic tank kag treatment plant.

Kalampay getting scarce and costly

Today a kilo of kalampay fetches P80 to P140, at par with other fishes. This freshwater crab was almost free before. Photo above shows a freshly broiled crab. Kalampay" for sale was almost unheard of 40 years ago. The freshwater crab teemed in Iloilo rivers and people caught it for free. Today, it fetches the minimum P80 per kilo. Surprisingly, Iloilo River, dubbed the country's biggest septic tank after Pasig River, is still home to crabs and shrimps that Ilonggos consume. Mention the word today to the young generation and they would stare at you bewildered. "Kalampay? Ano ra man? (Kalampay? What's that.)" They more they would stare at you blankly if you asked them what "katang" and "baringay" are. The usage of term is getting scarcer like the fate of kalampay. "Katang" is a juvenile kalampay, the size a half thumb while "baringay" are botton size ones that migrate inland from the sea where they are spawned.

Broad daylight robbery by Treñas and caboodle

    Mayor Jerry Treñas and his caboodle in the mass disinformation industry are yelping accolades and jumping in glee at nothing but how good, bright and promising the fates of the Iloilo Terminal Market and Iloilo Central Market would be under his watch.
