Pre-stressed concrete transmission poles replace PECO's aging log posts


IlOILO CITY, Philippines (13 August 2011) -- Today's guest at Reklamo Publico, Randy Pastolero, vice-president for operations and general manager of Panay Electric Company (PECO) explains that PECO's rate is now the cheapest in Western Visayas if not the entire country, at P7.30 per kilowatt-hour.


However, that is only for a limited period. PECO power rates will be adjusted after the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) approved its application for rate increase, probably in September this year. The adjusted price could reach P10 per kwh but that will still be the cheapest in the region where power rates average P10.50 to P12 per kwh,, says Pastolero.

PECO is now installing pre-stressed concrete poles to replace the aging ones made of logs. Of the 30,000 or so electric poles in its service areas, 7,000 are logs and have to be replaced, explains Pastolero, an engineer.

PECO already installed the pre-stressed concrete poles beside the aging ones because of cables owned by telecoms and cable-TV companies.

"We can transfer only our own wires into the new transmission posts," he says. "Our technical skills is limited only to electrical wiring; the TV cable companies and telecoms should the ones to transfer their own cables because they have the expertise."

Iloilo City Mayor Jedd Patrick Mabilog has formed a task force represented by PECO, TV cable companies and telecoms, for the transfer of cables from the log poles to the concrete ones. The first priority is the city proper area which the task force targets to accomplish before the Dinagyang Festival in January 2011.

Kalampay getting scarce and costly

Today a kilo of kalampay fetches P80 to P140, at par with other fishes. This freshwater crab was almost free before. Photo above shows a freshly broiled crab. Kalampay" for sale was almost unheard of 40 years ago. The freshwater crab teemed in Iloilo rivers and people caught it for free. Today, it fetches the minimum P80 per kilo. Surprisingly, Iloilo River, dubbed the country's biggest septic tank after Pasig River, is still home to crabs and shrimps that Ilonggos consume. Mention the word today to the young generation and they would stare at you bewildered. "Kalampay? Ano ra man? (Kalampay? What's that.)" They more they would stare at you blankly if you asked them what "katang" and "baringay" are. The usage of term is getting scarcer like the fate of kalampay. "Katang" is a juvenile kalampay, the size a half thumb while "baringay" are botton size ones that migrate inland from the sea where they are spawned.
