With William Martirez, guest of Kape kag Isyu
ILOILO CITY (24 March 2012) -- Microensure released P18 million in compensation to victims of Typyoon Sendong in Mindanao, today's guest in the talk show Kape kag Isyu disclosed.
Over 2,000 perished and 700 remained unaccounted for in the wake of the flash floods triggered by Sendong December 17 in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan cities.
Microensure, an insurance company that cater to enterpreneurs and self-employed groups, immediately released the insurance compensation of at least P50,000 per enrollee, said its Philippine country manager William Martirez.
"The purpose of releasing the compensation immediately is to give quick relief to our policy holders in order to enable them start their recovery," he explained.
Microensure's market include farmers, drivers, entrepreneurs and even "sikad" (pedicab) drivers attracted to its competitive charges. It also ensures houses made of light materials from fire.
Micro-ensurance is a new field in the insurance industry whose clientele come from low income groups. It ensures people, crops and homes from natural calamities and fire.
"When there is flood or typhoon, we don't have to personally verify damaged crops and estimate the extent of damage," Martirez said. "It is sufficient that the ensured farm is in the typhoon path and we rightaway release the fix ensured amount, say P50,000 or P100,000."
The same procedure applies to those ensured from fire. "It doesn't matter whether your house is totally or partially damaged: we released the fixed amount, say, P50,000 immediately to enable the ensured to rebuild the shelter."
The new structure is still ensurable even if made of light materials.
The company also engages in health insurance for the family or group. It expanded the definition of "family" and "dependent". One may not be related to the ensured but he or she qualifies as "family member" so long as he/she is dependent on the insured.
While other insurance companies recognize only minors as dependents, Micro ensure consider them dependents still even if they are already of age "so long as they are jobless and under the custody of their parents".
The same procedure applies to those ensured from fire. "It doesn't matter whether your house is totally or partially damaged: we released the fixed amount, say, P50,000 immediately to enable the ensured to rebuild the shelter."
In Iloilo, Microensure has partnered with Taytay sa Kauswagan (TSK), a successful micro-lending company catering to enterpreneurs. It ensures borrowers to secure them from losses due to unforeseen contingencies like calamities.
